Setting up a Bequest for the K9 Medical Detection New Zealand Charitable Trust

Thank you for taking the time to learn how you can help us continue our work with your bequest. We would love you to help our work live on after you have gone by including the K9 Medical Detection New Zealand Charitable Trust in your will.

We are a not-for-profit foundation strongly committed to providing an early non-invasive diagnostic test for cancer in New Zealand.

Blaze, our German shepherd, passed away after just ten short years in our lives. But her inspiration lives on with us every day. She taught us unconditional love, undying devotion and gave us an insight into the incredible intelligence and extraordinary sensory abilities that dogs possess. Blaze became our driving force and inspiration for K9 Medical Detection NZ and remains so to this day. By leaving a bequest or lifetime legacy, your kindness and compassion will enable us to continue the work inspired by Blaze and carried out by the incredibly dedicated dogs and their trainers at K9MD.

Why donate to K9 Medical Detection N.Z.?

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of cancer in the world. Every day, 70 people are diagnosed with cancer, every hour, one person dies from cancer.

Cancers detected at an early stage are more likely to be treated successfully and starting the treatment while the cancer is small and confined greatly improves the survival rate. While we have sophisticated laboratory diagnostic tests for many cancers, some cancers a) have no screening b) are difficult to detect and c) get diagnosed at an extensive disease.

An alternative to molecular and physical screening techniques is the use of medical detection dogs to identify volatile organic compounds (VOC) released from tumours. We have recently shown that we can train medical detection dogs to positively identify samples containing Colorectal cancer, Prostate cancer and Ovarian cancer.
